DESIGN – BRISTOL PFI SCHOOLS

Client: HBG Projects/HBG Construction

Background: Landmark was commissioned as landscape architect to the design team, which included Arup and local architects Alec French and Nugent Vallis Brierley, to redevelop four of Bristol’s Comprehensive schools, all of which were over fifty years old.

Description: The four schools, Henbury School, Monks Park School, Portway Community School and Bedminster Down School are located at sites throughout Bristol. All were fully operational at the time of the redevelopment, so the key challenge was to design new schemes around the existing fabric, whilst ensuring that the schools remained open and safe, before the redundant buildings were demolished.

Landmark played a key role in developing project masterplans for each school, as well as producing landscape and playground strategies, structure and detailed planting proposals, and sports pitch designs and specifications.

Client Benefits : Landmark’s planning, design and implementation experience, as well as local knowledge, ensured that planning consent was granted for redevelopment of all four schools. Construction commenced according to programme and the new schools opened on schedule; Henbury School in September 2005, Portway Community School in January 2006 and Bedminster Down and Monks Park Schools in April 2006.
